6 Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Garage

Over the winter, ice, snow, freezing rain, and slush can wreak havoc on your home’s garage. As the weather warms up, it's time to start your spring cleaning. Here are six tips to get your garage ready to welcome the long, sunny days of summer.

1.) Declutter your garage

Despite being one of the most used spaces in the home, garages are commonly the most cluttered. Your garage can quickly turn into a dumping ground for empty paint cans, broken appliances, and items you no longer use. To bring order to the space, the first thing you should do is get rid of anything you don’t need. Follow these steps:

    • Remove everything from your garage and put it on your lawn, walkway, or driveway so you can see exactly what you have
    • Make separate piles for items you want to keep, donate, recycle, toss, and sell

    • If you haven’t used the item in the last few years, ask yourself why and whether it’s worth keeping
    • Store any remaining items in plastic storage bins that can easily be stacked or tucked away
    • Donate items you no longer need to your local donations centre

2.) Clean your garage floor

If there’s road salt and sand all over your garage floor, now’s the time to clean it up:

  • Sweep your garage floor to remove any large chunks of debris

  • Fill a bucket with water, vinegar, and detergent

  • Dip a stiff-bristled broom into the solution and scrub away any dirt or salt deposits

  • Rinse the area with clean water

Additionally, if you store your car in the garage, the floor may have oil stains. You can get rid of these marks with a degreaser or laundry pre-solvent.

3.) Deodorize your garage

After a long winter, your garage may have developed a musty smell that you just can't seem to get rid of. Poor ventilation can often make the problem worse. First, air out your garage by opening the garage door. Next, purge your garage of any damp materials that may be contributing to the stale smell.

To deodorize your space, pour undiluted white vinegar into a spray bottle and mist the inside of your garage. You can repeat this step every few days to neutralize the smell. If you want to keep the unpleasant odours at bay, place a few open boxes of baking soda in various corners of your garage. You should replace the boxes every 30 days for ultimate freshness.

4.) Wipe the weatherstrip

The weatherstrip around your garage door prevents moisture, dirt, debris, and unwanted critters from getting inside. Use a damp cloth and an all-purpose cleaner to wipe it down. Check if anything is loose, brittle, cracked, torn, or deformed. If the weatherstrip is damaged, give the experts at Creative Door ServicesTM a call to have it replaced.

5.) Inspect your garage door

The average residential garage door opens and closes at least 1,500 times per year. Over time, this repeated use can take its toll. Carefully inspect your garage door for any signs of damage. If you find that your garage door has several cracked panels or is rusted through, a new door may be in order.

Check all the door’s moving parts, including the springs, rollers, tracks, hinges, and pulleys. If everything looks good and operates smoothly, apply a high-quality silicone-based lubricant or lithium grease to keep everything in good working order.
