How To Retrofit Your Garage Door Opener With Genie®: Wi-Fi Access And Monitoring

Are you thinking about upgrading your garage door opener with smart home technology? If so, you can purchase the Aladdin Connect® Wi-Fi Retrofit Kit by Genie® from Creative Door Services™. This system is compatible with most sectional garage door openers manufactured after 1993 that are equipped with photo-eye safety sensors. It allows you to remotely access and monitor your garage door from anywhere in the world via your smartphone or computer. Here’s a short set-up guide.

How To Set Up The Aladdin Connect® Retrofit Kit

Installing the Aladdin Connect® retrofit kit is quick and easy. Simply follow the seven steps outlined below to set up your new garage door opener.

1. Determine the mounting location

There are three ways to mount the Aladdin Connect® Door Control Module (DCM): it can be positioned next to the opener near the ceiling, near an existing wall console, or in place of an existing wall console. However, the location must be within five feet of a standard 110-volt AC power outlet.

Once you determine the mounting location, remove the mounting bracket from the back of the DCM, plug the power cord into an outlet and connect the plug to the DCM.

2. Check the Wi-Fi coverage in your garage

Before moving ahead with the installation, verify the strength of the Wi-Fi signal in your garage. You can do this by connecting your smartphone to your home’s Wi-Fi and placing it where the DCM will be mounted in your garage.

The Wi-Fi signal strength at that location must be at least two bars for the unit to work properly. If you can’t get at least two bars, you can move the Wi-Fi router closer to the garage or purchase a Wi-Fi extender.

3. Download the Aladdin Connect® app

Open the App Store or Google Play store on your smartphone and search for the free Aladdin Connect® app. Download the app and open it. Follow the in-app instructions to sign in or create a new account and set up the device and Wi-Fi connection.

4. Wire the Door Control Module

You can wire the Aladdin Connect® directly to the wall control connections at the powerhead or directly to the wall control unit. Make sure the garage door opener is unplugged when doing this. Leave the wire spool intact for this part of the installation.

Split the provided dual strand wires approximately two inches from the end and strip off half an inch of insulation. Press the orange tabs down and insert both wires into connection points for DOOR 1 on the back of the DCM. Trim and split the other end of the dual strand wire the same way as above.

Next, insert the wire into the wall control inputs either directly to the garage door opener or to the back of the wall control.

5. Mount and power the Door Control Module

Using the DCM mounting bracket as a template, mark and drill two 3/32-inch pilot holes and mount the bracket to the wall using the supplied screws. If you’re mounting the device to drywall, use the drywall anchors provided.

After, plug the power pack into the wall outlet as well as the back of the DCM. The LED lights on the DCM will flash momentarily. Snap the DCM onto the mounting bracket, route the wires, and secure them with the supplied staples.

6. Mount the Door Position Sensor module to the garage door

Don’t remove the battery pull tab from the Door Position Sensor (DPS) until instructed to do so by the Aladdin Connect® app. The DPS should be mounted near the top of the door panel.

Clean the door where the DPS will be mounted and use the double-sided tape to stick the mounting bracket to the door. The double-sided tape is designed to hold the bracket in place temporarily and should not be used for permanent mounting.

Next, pre-drill two 3/32-inch holes, being careful not to drill all the way through the door. Use the provided self-tapping screws to mount the DPS bracket to the top door panel’s end stile. Then, slide the DPS down onto the mounting bracket. It should snap into place. The DPS included with this kit is already programmed to the DCM.

7. Complete the programming

Restore power to the garage door opener and try opening and closing it using the wall control unit. Then, open the Aladdin Connect® app, and verify that the door position is accurate. If everything works as it should, you’re finished!
