The new RCMP building is a stunning addition to the City of Kelowna’s urban landscape. This $48-million building integrates all of Kelowna’s RCMP services into one location, while also offering much needed space to officers and administrative staff.
High security overhead doors and shutters add enhanced safeguards to this $48-million facility
Nearly 400 RCMP members and employees can now work at the same location and have access to a forensics lab, plenty of office space, and a 29-cell prison area. Creative Door Services (CDS) had the opportunity to be a part of the RCMP building construction, thanks to our longstanding relationship with Bird Construction.
A variety of overhead doors were installed onsite including the Raynor SteelForm S-16 Sectional doors, Richards-Wilcox Thermatite T175-20 Sectional insulated steel doors, Wayne Dalton Model 540/550 Fire Counter Shutters, and the Wayne Dalton Firestar Model 700 Fire shutter door. The Rolling Counter Shutters were used in the interior of the facility, and the Steel Sectional Doors were installed in the secure bays and storage area. These particular products were chosen because they meet the high security requirements and fire code compliance of the facility.
Mike Harrison, field operations manager at CDS in Kelowna described the layout of the RCMP building, “There are secure bays where prisoners are accepted as well as mechanic bays for other work. All of the different applications posed an interesting challenge as they had to function cohesively.”
The project requirements were precise considering architectural regulations had to be adhered to without compromising the RCMP’s requirements. Thanks to the help of our manufacturers Richards-Wilcox, Raynor, and Wayne Dalton, our team was able to source breakthrough products within budget. To keep the project moving forward, our Kelowna team found solutions to coordinate the installation of these products in conjunction with Bird Construction and the many other trades assisting with this project.
The new RCMP building is a significant community achievement that will help the Kelowna RCMP team to amalgamate its operations into one facility. CDS Kelowna is proud to play a role in the construction of this remarkable facility making this project one of the largest in scale for our Kelowna team since its inception in 1992.
